About Maha Rudram
Shri Rudram is an important part of Krishna Yajur Veda as it embodies the 5-lettered panchAkShari - “Om Nama Shivaya” at the heart of it. Shri Rudram is also called Namakam because many of the mantras in it carry the word “namaH” or “namo namaH”. namaH represents sarvasva sharanagathi - complete surrender to the Lord with the wish that He fulfill all our dharmic aspirations. The recitation of Namakam is followed by Chamakam (since the word “cha me” - meaning “for me” - appears repeatedly in it) which is a prayer to the Lord to bestow us with various materials and virtues that one needs in this life.
The recitation of entire Namakam and Chamakam once constitutes Shri Rudram. The recitation of the entire Namakam once with one paragraph of Chamakam and repeating it 11 times (for each of the 11 paragraphs in Chamakam) constitues Ekadasa Rudram. When 121 people recite Ekadasa Rudram it is MahaRudram – recitation of Rudram 1331 times.
The event will be conducted by Shri Venkatrama Sastrigal, Shri Bhaskara Sastri Garu and Shri Muralidhar Bhattaji-renowned vedic scholars in the DC area. They will be accompanied by a dozen vedic priests and one hundred and twenty-one ritwiks well-versed in the recitation of Rudram.
